Mike Evans, GrubHub.com, @grubhub

GrubHub.com began back in 2004 by two guys -- Matt Maloney and Mike Evans -- who were working for a major Internet company in Chicago at the time. As it often happened, Mike and Matt found themselves working late, hungry, and in need of delivery. Both were tired of the usual pizza and Thai places. They turned to the Internet to find a listing of Chicago restaurants that would deliver to them. But, the Internet failed them; there was no place online that could answer their simple question. Matt and Mike decided this needed to change immediately. Matt looked at Mike, and Mike looked at Matt. One said “Grub” and the other said “Hub” and, with that, GrubHub.com was born. The local Chicago site can be found at http://www.grubhub.com/chicago/.

About the sponsors

crowdSPRING, @crowdspring

crowdSPRING is a little company with big dreams based in Chicago -- one of the greatest cities in the world. Founded by Ross Kimbarovsky and Mike Samson, crowdSPRING was started to help people from around the world access creative talent, and to help creatives from across the globe find new customers.

With backgrounds in both the creative industry and law, crowdSPRING is a labor of love for a team that believes strongly in the creative process and the protection of intellectual property. They left no stone unturned -- from free, binding legal contract generation for every transaction and advanced digital watermarking to a built-in, secure escrow service and a feedback rating system -- they tried to make a safe environment for both Buyers and Creatives alike.

By helping buyers reach countless creatives across the globe, they're changing the game for the little guy. Now small businesses, one-man shops and individuals anywhere can tap into a global pool of creatives. In fact, they're so convinced that global talent pool will give your project new ideas, different perspectives and a far better final product -- they guarantee it.

Big Teeth Productions, @big_teeth

Big Teeth Productions is Chicago's Video Based Smile Factory Since 2005. What's that mean? Well, they are a company that stays on the pulse of what's new and necessary in the topsy turvy marketing atmosphere. They pride themselves on being able to tell the best story in every video they create, but they also know "the game" thanks to their decade plus experience in the ad agency world.

While video is their main focus, they also recognize the need to develop ideas that can work in other traditional and emerging media. They work WITH their clients, not just FOR them, and seek out those who understand the power of video to spread a message and engage an audience. They focus on online marketing; video for fundraising and special events; using social media outlets to get the most out of the videos they produce for their clients; and they are also developing original programming for television and the web. So if you've got a video itch, they're the ones to scratch it.

Wind City Social, @windycitysocial

Here are the answers to the questions we get asked about the most . . .

Can anyone join SMC?

Absolutely. Social Media Club is intended for those who are involved in social media, or want to learn. And it’s open to everyone, though discussions and content will likely focus on business applications and endeavors related to social media. If you're new to social media, you'll find plenty of people who can help you get started.

What’s SMC Chicago’s goal?

We’re hoping to provide SMC Chicago members with great, practical content about social media. According to our recent survey, most of our members are interested in learning more about social media for business, case studies, and best practices. So throughout the year, our aim is to bring in speakers and hold interactive sessions and workshops that focus on these topics. One part networking and socializing, one part practical business ideas.

How often do you meet and what are your events like?

Monthly. But you can come as often or as infrequently as you wish.
Not surprisingly, this is a social crowd. You'll find friendly people you can connect with in person and online.

When did the club get started?

Our first event was in October 2008.

How do I stay up to date with the meetings schedule? Three ways:

1. Join our Facebook group and check out the event postings for each meeting at http://smcchicago.org

2. Follow us on Twitter.com @SMCChicago

3. Join our LinkedIn group at http://budurl.com/smcchicagolinkedin

How can I help?

Contact us and let us know what you have in mind. We need help organizing events, finding sponsors, and generally getting the word out about the group. There’s always something to contribute, just let us know how you’d like to be involved. Our core steering committee typically chats once or twice a month via conference call to plan and strategize. And we’d welcome you!
